It is one of the most common questions in event production: Should we use an LED wall or projection?
The answer is not automatically LED, and it is not automatically projection. Both technologies can produce excellent results. The right choice depends on your venue, audience, content, lighting conditions, stage design and budget.
Here is how to decide which display technology makes sense for your corporate event.
What Is an LED Video Wall?
An LED video wall is constructed from modular LED panels that connect to create a larger digital display. Unlike projection, the display itself produces light.
That gives LED several advantages, particularly in bright environments. LED walls can also be configured into different sizes and shapes, making them useful for everything from presentation screens to dramatic scenic environments.
What Is Event Projection?
Projection uses a projector to send an image onto a screen or projection surface. Professional event projection is significantly different from setting up a small office projector.
Large conferences and corporate events may use high-output projectors, specialized lenses, multiple screens and sophisticated switching systems to create bright, professional presentation environments. Projection remains an excellent solution for many events.
LED Wall vs. Projector: The Biggest Differences
Brightness
LED has the advantage in high ambient light. Because LED panels generate light directly, they can remain vibrant in rooms where ambient lighting would wash out a projected image.
Projection performs best when the production team has greater control over room lighting.
Image Quality
Both technologies can deliver excellent images when properly designed. LED provides strong contrast and brightness, but factors such as pixel pitch and viewing distance matter.
Projection can deliver extremely detailed presentation content and large images when the projector, lens, screen and room conditions are properly matched. The question is not simply which technology has the better picture. It is which produces the best image in your room.
Stage Design
This is where LED gets especially interesting. LED does not have to be a rectangle. Panels can become part of the scenic environment, creating wide canvases, columns and other visual configurations.
Projection can also support creative scenic design, particularly through projection mapping and oversized surfaces, but the production requirements are different.
Space and Rigging
Projection requires throw distance. A projector must be positioned far enough from the screen to create the desired image size. Depending on the venue, that can consume valuable ballroom space or require rigging.
LED does not require projection throw distance. However, an LED wall has physical depth and weight and may require ground support, rigging, additional power and structural planning.
Content
Your content matters more than many planners realize. A beautiful LED wall can still look terrible if someone stretches a standard presentation across an unusual ultra-wide canvas.
If you are planning a custom LED environment, your content team should know the final screen dimensions and resolution early. Projection often works naturally with conventional presentation formats, although custom screen sizes also require purpose-built content.
Cost
For straightforward presentation environments, projection can often be more cost-effective than LED. But comparing only equipment prices can be misleading.
The complete production cost can include rigging, labor, power, screens, projectors, lenses, switching, LED processors, ground support and other infrastructure. Your AV provider should compare the complete system, not simply the price of a screen versus a projector.
When Should You Choose an LED Wall?
LED may be the stronger choice when you are producing a high-impact general session, working in a bright environment, creating an immersive stage, presenting heavily branded visual content, filming or streaming the event, or looking for a display that becomes a major part of the room’s visual design.
When Does Projection Make More Sense?
Projection can be an excellent choice for breakout rooms, meetings with traditional presentation content, environments where lighting can be controlled, events requiring multiple economical displays, or productions where the budget would be better invested in audio, lighting, cameras or other elements.
The most expensive display is not necessarily the best production decision.
Do Not Forget the Audience
Before choosing either technology, ask:
- Where is the farthest attendee sitting?
- How small is the smallest text in the presentation?
- Will cameras be capturing the screen?
- How bright is the room?
- What are the sightlines?
- What type of content will be displayed?
The screen is not there to impress the production team. It is there so the audience can see and understand the content.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
For some events, LED is absolutely worth the investment. For others, professional projection provides everything the event needs at a more efficient cost. Larger productions sometimes use both.
The best solution comes from looking at the complete production rather than choosing technology simply because it is trending.
